What is the difference between RS232 and RS485?

RS232 is point-to-point, single-ended, typically limited to about 15 metres. RS485 is differential, supports multi-drop networks and runs up to around 1,200 metres at low baud rates. RS485 is the usual choice inside industrial cabinets; RS232 remains common on instruments with a single host connection.
