This section lists software causes of black screens: black screen after a kernel update (upgrade failed or wrong kernel for the model; SD-card failures must be upgraded via serial port, and the program file must match the screen model; on touch screens tap a non-touch area 20 times within 4 seconds to enter calibration mode and verify); EMC/ESD tests damaging the screen (return for repair); after formatting, image 00 not stored so the screen only glows faintly (name images starting from 00); backlight off or wrong standby/screen-saver settings (screen I: config.txt R2.5=1 enables the saver, backlight R6=40, touch R7=10; screen II: enable at cfg 0x08 and set brightness 0x00-0x64 and time, e.g. 0x7D0 = 10 seconds before dimming to one quarter).
